Inspired by George Buchner’s ‘Woyzeck’, our rendition of this timeless tale, performed by just 50 AGS students, was able to deliver the heartbreaking story of Franz Woyzeck, a German soldier haunted by his PTSD. The audience observes this poor man's descent into madness, manipulated by figures of power in his life; his captain, a rich man who is ignorant to the struggles Woyzeck faces, his doctor, a power-hungry man obsessed with using Woyzeck for cruel scientific experiments and Woyzeck’s wife, Marie, her affair with a Drum Major being the cause of Woyzeck’s ultimate demise into an unreturnable rage. 

Our own performance transformed this narrative into a future dystopia, set at a time of nuclear and political fallout, underscored by a soundtrack of war-themed classics, from Lana Del Rey’s ‘Doing Time’ to The Cranberries ‘Zombie’. Lighting and costumes flourished with colour as we looked to emulate Jez Butterworth’s play ‘Jerusalem’; our war-torn set was combined with this grunge in order to set the tone for our production. However, this set and costume couldn’t have been done justice without an exceptionally hard-working cast and ensemble, whose performances kept audience members on the edge of their seats as they were transported away from a simple high school production into this world of Woyzeck.
